What is CHEC doing to be green? The Coffs Harbour Education Campus has already implemented the following GREEN initiatives: -
Reducing Energy Consumption & Costs - - Printers and photocopiers go into energy save mode
- Timers on Lights & Airconditioners in Computer Labs
- VOIP
- Virtualisation of servers (reduces physical hardware)
- Automatically shutting down all student computers (300+) at night/weekends
-
Reducing Paper Consumption & Costs - - Correspondence with students and staff about important IT related information via email
- Double-sided printing is the default setting in student computer labs
- Pay for printing & photocoping for students
- Shared Staff Printers – with the Multi-Function Devices (copier & printer) in staff buildings
- Use of Portals (MySCU & Moodle) for disseminating study materials
-
Reducing Carbon Footprint via Reducing Travel - - Use of Portals (MySCU & Moodle) for disseminating study materials
- Video conferencing
-
Recycling - - Recycle Bins at all printer locations
- Toner/Ink Cartridges/fax free disposal via PlanetARK. Recycling boxes are in A.G.11, B.1.10, Library, M.G.4 & O.G.30
-
Educating Staff & Students about Printing -
Also...At selected locations around the CHEC campus (P,O,Q blocks and the Gathering Space) recycle bins have been placed to encourage the recycling of rubbish in the public spaces. The bins are colour coded to match the coding of domestic bins. - The bins with the red tops are for general rubbish and food scraps.
- The bins with the yellow tops are for recyclables – glass, steel, aluminium, recyclable plastic, paper and cardboard, ie exactly the same as the domestic yellow bin.
What will CHEC be doing in the future?- Pay for printing/photocoping for staff
- Continue to look at virtualising servers when replacing servers rather than purchasing extra hardware
- A more energy saving data centre
What can I do to be more green?- Turning off screensavers - If you use a screensaver turn it off to save power, as modern LCD monitors will automatically go into a sleep state after an extended period of time.
- Think before you print. Ask yourself:
- Do I need to print this document or can I read, send and/or store it electronically?
- Have I checked the document in print preview to ensure it is formatted ready for print?
- Can I adjust margins, line spacing and/or font size to fit more on the page?
- Do I need to print single sided or can I print double sided (when photocopying too)?
- Can I reuse paper that has only been printed on one side?
- Do I need to print in colour or can I print in black and white?
- Turn your computer off at night
- If you are in a computer lab use the timers for the air-conditioning and the lights. If you are the last person to leave the lab turn the lights off.
- Switch off the monitor at the end of the day, or while you are away from the computer for a long period of time.
