Remote Access
What is Remote Access?
Remote
Access enables you to connect to the Internet from your own home computer.
This connection occurs between your computer and an Internet Service Provider
(ISP). Your computer makes a telephone call to the ISP's computer through
an electronic device called a modem. The modems enable the computers to
use the telephone system to talk to each other. Once successfully connected,
you can browse the World Wide Web, download and upload files, read and
send email.
How Do I Get Remote Access?
Southern
Cross University is one of the few universities that still offer a free
remote access service to its staff and students. All staff and students
automatically have access to this service, all you need to do is configure
your home computer. See below for more information.
What is the Service Available?
Remote access is available to staff and students of the Southern Cross
University and Senior College staff. These CHEC members have a quota of
15 hours per week, maximum of 2 hours per connection. The quota is reduced
by the amount of time logged in, to the nearest minute. Unused time for
one week does not accrue to the next week. Users can dial in for a maximum
of 90 minutes per connection with a minimum logout time between sessions
of 20 minutes. This 20 minute logout time only takes effect after you
have been connected for at least 10 minutes. This service is governed
by a an Acceptable Usage Policy.
For more information contact the Help
Desk.
PLEASE NOTE: Telecommunication costs can be incurred for each attempt
to connect regardless of whether it is successful or not. This may be
as a result of exceeding quota or communication difficulties. The user
shall be responsible for all telecommunication charges incurred while
using the campus remote access facilitates.
